DICK MONTAGNE

Fine Art Photography

I have been involved with the arts all of my working life. After receiving a BFA in fine art photography and film from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1974 I spent the next 30+ years working in the entertainment business. After resuming my career as a journeyman stagehand, by 1979 I joined the International Cinematographers Guild where I learned the craft of film making from some of the best people to have ever worked in the film business, including Academy Award winning Actors, Directors, and Cinematographers just to name a few of the crafts that I interacted with. I was able to collaborate with a very diverse group of very talented and brilliant people all of whom were dedicated to making an art form that communicated to a vast variety of people the world over, it was both challenging and exhilarating.

Just as I was retiring from the Motion Picture Industry, digital photography started to make inroads into the world of film. I embraced digital photography as an evolution of the medium I had spent a career working with, and as it has evolved to it’s present state, has now moved into state of the art in image creation. As always, the artist’s eye is paramount, the technology is only in service to that vision, what is put into the frame is just the beginning of making a fine art photograph. I have been blessed to have studied and worked with masters, and as I like to say, “I was paying attention”. I think, as do many others who know me, that the work I have been doing the last few years is the finest of my lifetime. Ever since Covid-19 hit, I have worked in isolation at my home, where I assembled a studio so that I could work in any weather at any time of day, whenever the creative impulse moved me. The pictures you have been looking at, or are about to see, were created for the most part during this time of trial for all of us.

Now more than ever, is a time to seek beauty in the world we live in, and to my eye a flower epitomizes that which is most beautiful in nature and our world, so that has been my focus. Almost everything you see I have grown myself which gives me a deeper connection to each of my images. I hope you enjoy them and would maybe like to have one on the wall of your home or office to be reminded of the beauty that surrounds us all.
